Spray Tan Prep Instructions

Spray Tan Prep Instructions

Believe it or not, your flawless spray tan results are not 100% because of your spray tan artist. It also comes down to your proper prep and aftercare.

Follow these steps to ensure you get the best long last result.

  1. EXFOLIATE. you want to be exfoliating 3-4 times before your tan. Ideally all the time, but most importantly about every other day for the week leading up to your tan.

Last exfoliation should be the night before your tan. I recommend using a exfoliating mitt over a sugar scrub or other products that contain a lot of oils.

  2. MOISTURIZE. You want your skin in its healthiest stay hydrated skin absorbs the tan solution evenly, dry/dead skin will hold the DHA (tanning ingredient) more than hydrated skin, so to avoid a uneven/patchy tan. hydrate regularly.

Last lotion application is 12-24 hours before your tan.

  3. HAIR REMOVAL. It is best to have all hair removal done 24 hours prior to your appointment and with a shower between to remove any residue from sugar, wax, lotion bars on razors. I recommend limiting shaving during your tan, and always wait to shave after application until the day of the event (if applicable). As shaving is a form of exfoliation and will slowly remove the tan in these areas.

If you do hair removal too close to your tan appointment, the follicles will still be open and the tan solution will get trapped inside and create an uneven tan on these areas.

  4. NAILS AND SPA APPOINTMENTS. Getting your nails done for an event is always nice, but it is important that it is 24 hours before your tan, The lotions, exfoliants, acetone, polish remover will RUIN your tan, However I can protect your nails with a barrier cream. SO rest assured your french manicure, or light coloured polish will not be tinted with a spray tan.

Other spa appointments like facials, massages, body treatments, etc. should be done 48+hours before your tan. Due to the way these are done, the products used often take longer to be absorbed into your skin or to be washed off.

  5. WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR TAN. What you wear/bring to your tan appointment can effect your results. Ideally you are wearing LONG LOOSE clothing. This means long pants and sleeved shirts. The goal is to not rub off solution/bronzers with tight clothing, and to avoid skin/skin folds touching during the development time. (arms, underarms, knees, thighs. The thickness of the clothes doesn’t matter, but we do want to prevent sweating. so heavy clothes in summer months isn’t ideal. Darker coloured is best to avoid bronzer transfer, although that isn’t common. Loose fitting bras are ideal after, or no bra. Tight fitting may cause the bronzer to rub off.

  6. WHAT TO WEAR DURING THE TAN. This is completely up to you. You can wear panties (most do to have a tan line) but no no tan lines is your preference that is totally okay with me. Some will choose to wear an old bra or bathing suit as well. Again whatever your comfortable with and be mindful as there will be tan lines.

  7. AFTER THE TAN. It is very important that you stay 100% dry and sweat free from the time of your appointment until your first rinse (1-5 hours). If you get wet or sweat, you risk the bronzers coming off in those areas and the tan will develop unevenly. You need to rinse at your destinated time (discussed at appointment) if you don’t or you forget, you run the risk of the tan over developing for your skintone/type and it may turn brassy.

  8. YOUR RINSE. Is just that, a rinse in lukewarm water. No shampoo, body wash, shaving, lotion/skincare. Just a rinse making sure you get all of the cosmetic bronzers off. It is important to remember that with rapid tans, your tan will mostly be gone at this rinse, but will return fully in 12-18 hours, some it may take a full 24 hours. you can get wet or sweat a little in this time, but it is not recommended to soak in water or sweat too much if possible.

  9. PRODUCT USE. The products you use on your skin will effect the duration of your tan. You want to stay away from DOVE, DIAL, BATH AND BODY WORKS, ST. IVES to name a few. They tend to be full of low quality ingredients, that don't actually help your skin. Sticking to more natural products that aren’t full of mineral oil, oil based (some types) or heavy in fragrance. Some brands you can grab almost anywhere. Aveeno or ceraVe. I also retail body wash, lotion, face tan water, tan remover, exfoliating mitts as well as different shades of self tanner.

  10. SPRAY TANS AND THE SUN. NO it doesn’t protect you from the sun. YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN. Lotion is best when it comes to drug stores brands but tread carefully with what brand you choose. I recommend a high price point, and one that is not mineral oil based. AROSOL is not your spray tans friend. With a high % of alcohol it will strip your tan. I currently carry a sprayable sunscreen with lower alcohol %, so it is good to use with a spray tan.
